THE DISCIPLINEThe Discipline is a statement of principles and beliefs by which our Society endeavors to learn and express lessons in Christian living. The Discipline makes useful suggestions based on spiritual values for the guidance of members in the conduct of their daily lives and for carrying on the business of the Meeting. The Discipline suggests rather than commands, and raises questions or queries rather than giving specific answers. It palaces upon the individual conscience, rather than upon external authority, the responsibility for the discipline of the spirit. The Discipline encourages the individual, the group and Society to seek and find the guidance of the Spirit. With this insight the Meeting for Business as well as the Meeting for Worship can become a living religious experience. The individual member who does not approve of a particular resolution to a concern with which the rest of the members are in harmony should be willing to let the meeting assume the burden for the decision. The Discipline is intended as a handbook and guide for those of the Society of Friends who belong to Iowa Yearly Meeting (Conservative). Suggestions for changes should be forwarded to a standing committee, to be named for the purpose. Advices and Queries: It is hoped that the Advices and Queries will serve as the central guide for our testimonies and beliefs. George Fox wrote: "I saw into that which was without end, things uttered, and of greatness and infinitude of the love of God, which cannot be expressed by words." In this spirit, early Friends never accepted any theological dogma as a test for approval of each other or of others. Quotations and Bibiography: The many books and articles and written records of Friends' beliefs are valuable sources of spiritual enrichment. Some quotations as well as a bibliography and suggested reading list are found in this Discipline. Glossary: Because language changes over the years, a Glossary of Friends' terms and expressions is included. The background of individuals vary greatly, so the outward symbols and names people use may raise unnecessary barriers. The spiritual facts behind these terms are the essentials. |
