MEETING FOR WORSHIP WITH ATTENTION TO BUSINESS, Fifth month, 7th day, 2006
Karin McAdams, Clerk
The meeting began with a few moments of silence and
a reflective thought:
“There must be amidst all the confusions of the hour a
tried and undisturbed remnant of persons who will not
become purveyors of coercion and violence, who are
ready to stand alone, if it is necessary, for the way of
peace and love among men.” — Rufus Jones, 1940
SPECIAL BUSINESS: Karen Wheeldon described to
the meeting her family’s effort to adopt a visually
impaired Russian child. They asked to have donations
given to them for adoption expenses funneled through
our meeting’s Sufferings Fund. Friends enthusiastically
approved Karen’s request. Donation checks should be
made out to Penn Valley Meeting with the word
“adoption” or “Russian child” in the note line.
MINISTRY AND OVERSIGHT: Friends expressed
appreciation for the committee’s work in planning the
retreat and approved the report. There was some
discussion of Penn Valley’s role in Iowa Yearly
Meeting, a subject that was referred back to Ministry
and Oversight.
TREASURER: Friends heard the treasurer’s report.
Addressing the meeting’s tight funding, Friends agreed
that a notice in the Friendly Connection noting the need
for donations would be acceptable. $67 was donated to
the retreat and not used. Friends agreed to let it go into
the operating fund. The report was approved.
HOUSE UPKEEP: The report referred to a possible
AFSC use of the meeting house for a brunch. This
brought up many questions and was referred back to the
committee for clarification.
ADHOC GAME NIGHT/RECREATION
COMMITTEE: A suggestion that Friends attend a
baseball game together didn’t receive enough support
to qualify for a discount. Friends did express a wish for
further game nights.
The meeting closed with a few moments of silence.
