Thanksgiving mission
to Pine Ridge
2006
Barb Luetke writes to tell us that
she is thinking of organizing a
group to help build bunk beds for
Pine Ridge Reservation, and for
native peoples in the L.A. area.
The work would be done over
Thanksgiving week and again
between Christmas and New
Years.

And Barb includes
this following
background message,
an e-mail from
Marianne Lockard of Arkansas:
Arkansas Quakers are building
and distributing bunk beds with
guidance from Shirl Walter . He is
able to adjust his work schedule to
assist those who want to volunteer.
Our huge challenge is getting
volunteers to come and build beds.
Yet, we welcome all who would
like to come, and the cost for
doing so is minimal.
Volunteers stay in hotel rooms.
There are several inexpensive and
moderately priced motels in the
area. They have all given us good
price breaks. There is also a
state park for camping and F/
friends can bed down on the floor
at the local Wesley Center (for
free), they have a kitchen and
bathrooms/showers we can use.
We have a complete list of places
and will be glad to send you
a copy, when you make plans to
come. We also have a list of
various places at which to eat. We
can help you in making
arrangements that will suit the
needs and fancy of those that will
come.
We have
protective eye
wear, gloves,
etc. Wear old
clothes that can
get stain
splattered and
ruin good
clothing. Bring water bottles and
any snacks that
you might like to munch on while
working.
Most of the work is not “heavy”
and can be done by novices.
Plan on staying a half day, a day
or several days. Whatever you can
manage.
We would love having you!!
