Some Guidelines for Meeting Tasks
Every so often we Friends may need a gentle reminder about the Do-it-ourselves nature of our meeting. That's why we pass
around the sign-up sheet during the last part of Meeting for Worship—so that Friends can volunteer for the non-threatening yet
so essential weekly duties. Perhaps, it is time to again publish the guidelines to assist in these tasks.
Breaking Meeting
At approximately 9:50 am, the person breaking meeting should say something to this effect:"Now is the time for
sharing joys, sorrows, concerns in a contemplative spirit." After an appropriate time for this, the person breaking
meeting ends the silence by leading the shaking of hands. Next, after standing, welcome guests and new attenders,
mention the guest book, and start the sign-up sheet around. This is followed by introductions and announcements.
Invite all to stay for the program after sharing refreshments and mention what the program is if no one else has done so.
Note: Persons might remember to speak clearly and loudly enough for all to hear.
Bringing Refreshments
Drinks are already provided so the weekly sign-up concerns food only. A variety between sweet and
nonsweet ( i.e. fruit, raw vegies, cheese) is good and should provide a nibble for about 25-30 people, keeping in
mind ones own budget and that simple is fine. The Meeting asks that the fare be laid out before or after
Meeting for Worship since stirring around in the kitchen is distracting.
Childcare Checker
At a little before 10:00, go to the upstairs classroom. You will entertain, distract, take care of any children
too young to participate in First Day School activities. If no younger children are present, check with the teacher
to see if help is needed before returning to Meeting for Worship.
Cleaning Up and Closing the Meethinghouse on First Day
- Check to see if dishes are washed and put away. Are the stove burners off?
- Sweep the carpet with hand or electric sweeper.
- Bag trash from bathrooms and kitchen and carry to curbfor Monday morning pick-up.
- Check to see if windows upstairs and down (in all rooms) are closed and locked. In cold weather, be sure the
upstairs thermostat is at the lowest setting.
- Be sure both back doors are locked.
- lf you have no key, make prior arrangements for lock up with someone who has a key. If you have a
key, punch in code. Exit and lock both front door locks.
