WHEN WILL IT END?
by Reva Griffith

The war has begun,
The war our president
Declared months ago
With unilateral fanfare,
The war planned and brought into being
By the "patriots" of this country,
The war many citizens of Earth
Begged them not to start
In vigils and marches,
In shouts and whispers,
With banners and stickers,
By daylight and candlelight,
Hundreds, thousands,
All together.
But THEY didn't listen
And now, tanks like corps of angry bugs
Crawl across the desert sand,
Carrying uniformed men and women
Ready to brandish their weapons
And engage all who block their way
In combat.
And in the skies planes and helicopters
Bring down destruction with bombs
And cannon fire,
And unmanned missiles hone in
On targets where buildings explode,
Fires rage, and humans scramble for safety,
The "collateral damage" of a war
They had nothing to do with.
And the vigils and protests go on.
As people urge an end to the fighting,
Cry in vain for peace,
Ache for the humans caught
In this murderous folly
Where soldiers and innocents perish
And the powerful and wicked hide
As the bombs rain.
