Quaker Education/Iowa Yearly Meeting (C)Interim ReportAs part of the "external" agenda of the Scattergood Friends School, a group of interested Friends in the Yearly Meeting was sought to begin to re-explore the subject of Quaker Education. It took some time to begin to sort out many issues involved in this broad subject. Following is a summary of what has evolved from the exchange of email messages among the group. Some of us thought there would be agreement that Scattergood offers many advantages over public schools, and while everyone recognizes many things Scattergood does do very well, several people expressed their satisfaction with the public school system and how theirs, anyway, have also begun to address educational factors outside the classroom. One of the most thought provoking ideas was the statement that Scattergood isn't serving the children of the Yearly Meeting, indicated by the large number of teens who don't attend the school. That, of course, leads to questioning how to change Scattergood so it is serving the needs of the Yearly Meeting. The need to address Quaker education for younger children, perhaps using Scattergood for retreats, etc. was expressed. This would serve not only for that purpose, but also to introduce these children to Scattergood and the possibility of attending. Finally the idea of using QuakerNet and/or Scattergood to address the life long learner, perhaps in ways similar to Pendle Hill was advanced. QuakerNet can be used to facilitate online discussions and a place to "publish" educational materials, bridging the distances between us. Conferences, courses, retreats, etc. might be hosted on the Scattergood campus.
